Absolutely agree that population is a key part of the equation. Andrew&#039;s presentation was preceeded by a 10 minute presentation by Hans Rosling on this issue -http://www.ted.com/talks/hans_rosling_on_global_population_growth.html. 
What Andrew discussed was more a shift of focus to other structural problems which are also really important to ensuring sustainable food security, even beyond population growth, which as you point out there is little we can do about.</description>

Vital ones yes but I dont believe a focus on population IS misleading, although it is almost certainly uncomfortable for many; partly because there is so little we can do about it, partly because it is one factor at the very root of the issue - that humans are not able to control their own individual impulses in the face of catastrophe. 

To deny the role of population is to invite ridicule.</description>
